Cushing’s great-great-grandfather, Robert, who earned his fortune as a tea and china merchant, commissioned Boston architect John H. Sturgis to design a Newport summer cottage (what the rest of us call a mansion) in the 1860s. His great-grandfather, Howard Gardiner Cushing, was a celebrated Rhode Island artist who rubbed shoulders with and painted members of the Newport elite when he wasn’t traversing Europe. It is now open to the public as a museum run by the Newport Preservation Society. Restrooms are available for visitors at all Newport Mansions. At The Breakers, additional restrooms are in the Welcome Center. Visit Marble House
The Grand Salon, designed by Allard and Sons, served as a ballroom and reception room. Designed in the Louis XIV style, it features green silk cut velvet upholstery and draperies. The walls are carved wood and gold gilt panels representing scenes from classical mythology, inspired by the panels and trophies adorning the Galerie d'Apollon at the Louvre. The ceiling features an 18th-century French painting in the manner of Pietro da Cortona depicting Minerva, with a surround adapted from the ceiling of the Queen's Bedroom at Versailles.

Our regular house-tour tickets – The Breakers, One-Property, Duo and Trio – are not for any specific date or time. They can be used any time the mansions are open for tours, and they do not expire. You may purchase them in advance or in person when you arrive.

Parking is free onsite at all properties except for Hunter House and The Breakers Stable & Carriage House, where street parking is available. At Green Animals, parking is in the adjacent St. Philomena School parking lot. The only entrance to the Green Animals is from the St. Philomena lot from June 17 – August 27. There is no access to the property from the Green Animals parking lot.

The Salon was designed by Allard and Sons and was decorated with 22-karat gold wall panels, green silk cut velvet upholstery and draperies, and painted ceiling murals.
Young children are always welcome; however, we cannot allow strollers or carriages inside the mansions because of the damage that such vehicles can cause to historic surfaces and furnishings. Stroller parking areas are available near the entrance of each mansion. Cushing has no background in hotels, but his family does. His great uncle was the founder of Squaw Valley Ski resort in 1949.
In 1963, the Preservation Society of Newport County purchased the house from the Prince Trust, with funding provided by Harold Stirling Vanderbilt, the Vanderbilt couple's youngest son. Through the Prince Trust, the Prince family donated virtually all original furniture for the house directly to the Preservation Society. Families with valid EBT or WIC cards from any state are eligible for $2-per-person regular admission per house for up to four people. This discount can only be claimed when purchasing tickets in person.
